Default SII XJ Auto problems.... loss of gears

Hi All,

I have a query I thought i would ask to see if someone can offer any guidance.
My father has recently purchased a series 2 XJ to restore. He had picked it up and driven it approx 1200km, then one day he went to take it for a drive and the transmission failed. It didn't make any noise or anything, however all power was lost. there is no drive in any gears.

this lead me to initially think it might be an issue with the selector linkages, but this all seems to be ok.

I have had a quick look over. Given that it didn't make any noises and power has been lost to all gears I don't think something major has been damaged.

the car still starts fine.... just no gears! forward or reverse.

Has anyone else had any similar problems, or have any advice what I should be looking for?

Thanks
Dale

Dale,

You appear NEW, so welcome to our world.

Please go to the "new member area" and introduce yourself and your car, that keeps things on the straight and narrow.

You have NOT specified XJ6 or XJ12, that might help later on.

The trans fluid on these can sometimes just "go down", and it it is just a Jag thing. Check the fluid level, engine running. If it is about 1 -2 litres down then all drive can be lost, so make sure it is FULL, and a "little" over on these is NOT a bad thing.

Of course there may be many other gremlins let loose, but the fact you drove it so far without too much hassle, has me thinking it is something simply for now.

Welcome to the forum Dale,

+1 to Grant's recommendations.

Add to them checking it's not as simple as the cable or selector lever coming adrift from the side of the transmission.

If it's an XJ6 you probably have the Borg Warner 65 transmission and maybe, just maybe, the fix will be as simple as adjusting the bands:

Borg Warner 66 Transmission Adjustment

The article is titled "BW66" adjustment but the same procedure is used on the BW65. The "66" is just a heavier duty version of the "65"

Cheers

No driver anywhere indicates the torque converter may have given up, or at least the uni-directional clutch within it.

thanks for all the replies guys. I have added my intro and car details. Its a XJ6. I checked the fluid this morning and yes it was about 1.5lts down, so I've topped that up, but still no drive. I've checked the selector linakages into the box and this appears to be working properly, so, I'm guessing now its something internal such as the torque converter.... sounds like its to be trailered off to a transmission shop for an inspection....

cheers.

Default XJ6 loss of gears

You may find that the drive tangs on the torque converter have broken off, which means no pump pressure. You will need a new front pump, and make sure they strip and clean the box, because it will be full of debris.
