soak in petrol?
Hi all, I need to replace the camshaft gaskets.
A friend told me to soak the gaskets in petrol before installing and this replaces the need for any additional kind of sealant. Does that sound right to you?
If anyone has done this particular job before is there anything I need to be especially attentive to? It'll be a first for me.
Thanks so much.

Never heard of the gasoline bit before but there are lots of things I've never heard of.
If the mating surfaces are pristine-smooth I just install the gaskets dry. If less than pristine I use some non-hardening sealer like Permatex #2
Cheers

Did he mean perhaps oil?
Wiping rubber gaskets, and in particular valve cover gaskets, with oil
is an old trick. It allows the gasket to creep as the fasteners are tightened
allowing the gasket to seek the best position.
Doing this I am on the original valve cover gaskets as well as transmission
gasket without any leaks whatsoever.
