Default Radio dead - replace or repair?

My radio (the basic LCD display one not the touch screen) on 2008 X Type Diesel Auto has suddenly died (LCD dead), although the surrounding buttons are still illuminating - no other symptoms. Have checked and replaced 10 amp fuse #43 which was blown but blows again immediately when radio switched on.

Is this pointing to a short or other fault in the radio unit itself or something worse? Is it cheaper and easier just to replace the whole thing with a salvage unit for less than £100, with the risk that there may still be a problem somewhere else?

Or should I go for a complete new aftermarket job with all the bells and whistles inc sat nav?

Any suggestions out there?

Thanks in advance.

I have always enjoyed the extra feature set and expandability of aftermarket, there is where my vote lies.

Is the radio entirely dead, or just the display?

If you are going to keep the car for at least a few more years, I'd go for an after market with rear camera view. (Maybe even Sat Nav)

The display is dead, but the buttons illuminate the same as the climate controls etc. Blows fuse 10 immediately.

Replacement from a breaker may be 40 or 50 quid, if you are hanging onto it, I'd go aftermarket.

They can be fixed, but that will likely be more expensive than replacing it.
