Default steering column help

*** I have not done anything yet and will not do anything unless I am sure it is 1. safe and 2. simple enough to do ***

With how im sitting in the car and the position of the dash, the steering wheel feels a little too close to me with the quick release and the Nardi hub adapter. Would it be possible/ a good idea to cut a few inches out of the steering column and weld it back together? I would do a few passes over the welds to make sure they wouldnt come apart. Ive found its an older hot rodding technique im just wondering if anyone has any experience with this?

I wouldnt.
In my landrover with after market wheel and adaptor i turned the adaptor down on the lathe to approx 30mm thick so the splined area remained the same
