Default Strictly leather? Smog Issue.

Guys I just picked up a 79 xj6 with a nice vinyl interior. Looks really nicely done, but I'm unsure whether Jag has strictly leather interiors for the XJ6. I'm thinking yes, and that my car was redone at some point. Also, I smog failed today due to high NO levels, any suggestions?

The smog issue is wide open. It could be many items. Do you have a check engine light? It could be as simple as a temp sensor for the fi, to air flow meter, to a vacuum leak. Lots of places to start looking. It should give you some kind of symptoms. How do the plugs look?

Hey Ken, good to see you.

To OP, are all your other levels normal? It will help the guys rule out Cats, O2 sensors etc.

No expert by any means, but high NO, check EGR valve. (someone posted a problem X300, ages ago).

Thanks guys, I'm doing the checks this weekend. The other readings seems to be normal range, my mechanic thinks its either the cats or the egr valve so I think I'm on the right track. Will report back soon.

All the USA market cars had leather. For other markets cloth was standard on the base models, optional on others. I'm not aware of a vinyl option although vinyl was, of course, used in others areas of the interior.

Cheers

In the 70s, Jaguar and other manufacturers used a rather horrible nylon cloth on the cheaper cars instead of leather. I remember cleaning a set on a '76 Rover P6 I had in 1985. This cloth was, however, very hard wearing, much better than leather, unless burnt by a cigarette butt !

There is no EGR on a 1979 XJ6. You just have a catalyst & on O2 sensor. You also do not have a check engine light either. The interior of your car has quite a bit of vinyl in it such as the console & trim panels around it, the lower a post trims top of dash, backs & side panels of the seats as well as the door panels.

Thanks so much for this unique information. The seats themselves also seem to be vinyl of pretty decent quality, matching the trim pieces. I'm still thinking the interior was redone at some point. Thanks for the info on the EGR, I didn't pass smog so I'm assuming now its the cat.
