Default Suspension questions

Hearing a fair amount of rattling/clunking from the front end going down hills at slow speeds. All the components are/look new, but a lot on the car has not been tightened enough (hose clamps, steering shaft u joints, etc) so I thought I’d take a look today.

two questions:
1) does anyone have torque specs for all suspension components? Several pieces were loose to a small ratchet so I tightened them up a bit; don’t know if I can/don’t want to overdo it.
2) what is this figure 8 metal thing? It’s loose, and rattles around. Thinking about buying a second big wrench so I can tighten the big nut/bolt but wanted to check here first.

thanks!
Benjamin

It's a tie-down hook/recovery hook. Torque spec is 95-115 pounds

Cheers

Benji all the torque specs you need are in the shop manual which is available for free download in the stickies section here. I posted this same question and someone gave me the exact page numbers and may even have posted the page. Look up my thread on torque specs and you'll find what you're looking for.

oh and for that mount bushing I used a 1/2 drive ratchet on one side and a big *** adjustable on the other. The tow hook should not be loose.

If you are hunting down rattles and clunks from the front suspension, don't forget to look at the top mounting point for the front shock absorbers.

I've owned a couple of mid 80s Jags, and both had deteriorated rubber bushings in the bayonet style upper shock mount. When the rubber bushing falls away, there is metal to metal contact between the metal washer on the shock and its mount on the chassis. You would think it would rattle all the time, but the gas charged shock keeps it close to the body most of the time. A little more severe bump, however, will cause quite a clunk . I am sure there is a tool for holding the shock shaft still to take the nuts off to get at the bushing, but it seems I always end up using a vice grip to hold the shaft to remove the nuts to get at the bushing.

As an aside, my wife and I took the 84 xj6 to a British car show about an hour from the house. My wife, who is used to driving her Mercedes with the rubber band tires, remarked "this car sure rides nice. It is very relaxing to ride in" which made my day.
