Default throttle cable slack?

greetings...i recently had the throttle cable changed in my 83 xj6 ser III...new cable seems kind of long and lays all over the back end of the motor, and there is a lot of slack on the inner wire, and the adjustment tube on the bracket is all the way out to the end. i can't make it any tighter as the adjustment tube will fall out the bracket. is it poss that my indie jag mech ordered the wrong cable or is all that slack normal? how much slack is normal? seems i really have to press on the accelerator pedal further to get it to have an effect on the throttle. is there another adjustment that i can make?
thanks in advance, wm

Sounds all wrong to me.

The outer section should NOT be all that loose and flopping around.

The inner cable sounds like it is waaaay tooooo long.

I reckon he got the wrong cable from wherever, and has an attitude of "near enough is good enough" which is totally unacceptable.

Go back and insist he sort it as it were his own car.

Possibly the wrong cable, but......

The cable comes out of the footwell, up and towards the firewall, and runs alongside some wires and vacuum hoses then drops and curves down towards the throttle body. There are (or should be) little clips to hold it in place as I recall. If missing the clips just use wires ties to hold it in position. It won't look so long and floppy once it's been correctly routed.

I could almost swear that there's adjustments at both ends of the cable.

Cheers

Ok, there are no retaining clips at all! I just don't recall the original cable being that "floppy" though. Now that adjustment at the bracket near the throttle body is maxed out... I'll have to check the other end of the cable at the pedal. Thanks for the advice and replies, sirs. Will follow up and let you know what's going on.

Just use some wire ties to keep it up and out of the way.

ok, checked the other end of the cable. it is attached to the pedal by a small steel ball at end of cable...no adjustments to be made. i can move the inner cable about an inch in slack before the throttle arm moves or i feel resistance on other end of cable. i took some pics with my phone, but i don't know how to upload. i was thinking of releasing the end near the pedal and pulling up slack, moving adjustment to half way and devising a new anchor stop on the pedal. what do you think?

How much adjustment is left at the throttle end? I wonder if your mechanic tried adjusting it at all?

Or, maybe it IS the wrong cable as previously suggested (?)

Going back to your first post answers my question. Try adjusting it in the other direction.
