tips for new owners of XJ-6 1980-1987
These tips apply to the Series 3 XJ-6 between 1980 and 1987 US market cars, and maybe Series 2 and Series 1.
1) do not replace the Opticell light bulb with a higher watt incandescent bulb or you will melt the Opticell lenses. Instead, use a powerful directional LED bulb that directs light forward >>>.
2) if your tail light Lens-to-chromed-Housing Seals are deteriorated or non-existent, (originally made of foam which desintegrates in 20 years), replace with the rubber string used in house window screens to pinch the screen to the aluminum frame, (available at Home Depot in grey or black). It does a better job of sealing and does not deteriorate. Inexpensive.
3) if you need to replace the foam gaskets for the Fender Sidelight Lenses, cut your own from the Foam Pads used behind house On-Off wall switch plates. (also HomeDepot, pack of 6 pads).
3a) or go to any JoAnn Fabrics stores and get 8½ x 11 x 1/4" foam sheets in their Crafts Dept. available in many colors, and while you're there, look at all the Headliner fabrics, they have the same material used in XJ-6. Look in Sunday paper for 40% Off coupons. Very inexpensive.
4) on the subject of Fender Sidelites, you can make them Flash with the Turn Signals and Emergency Flashers with a very simple re-wiring at every fender. You'll need about $7.00 worth of electrical supplies which you might already have in your toolbox. If you want a Video showing the sidelites flashing with the turn signals, and Instructions to modify the wiring, just ask me.
5) you can modify the Hood Stay Bracket to allow opening more than the stock 45 degrees and stay at maximum opening angle by fabricating a new Stay Bracket out of aluminum or any other metal you prefer. Below is a picture of the bracket measurements needed.
