I love the way Pirelli tires stick to the pavement!
I have old Pirelli 205/70VR-15's on my coupe, now.
What are the best tires that match the performance?
I was looking at these, but they don't seem like a good replacement.

The selection is thin in 15" tires these days. The only true performance oriented choice I know of in 205/70 or 215/70 is the Michelin XWX....that you need to get from a specialty supplier for $400-$500 each.

You can still get the (reproduction) Dunlop SP Sport 205/70 from specialty suppliers. Not cheap, maybe $250 each? Like they used on the Series 1 Cars....and maybe Ser IIs as well....I can't remember. Try Lucas Tire, Coker Tire

Those Pirelli Scorpions look good to me at a glance. Might be better than an older design Pirelli for all we know

I wore out a set of Michelin MXW's, around 1988. They wore out prematurely and Michelin refunded the purchase amount.
I'm thinking about bumping the rims up to 16".
Maybe I could source some good tires for a lot less?
I have been looking at the reproduction Dunlop center-lock aluminum rims.
I am looking for some spline-drive hubs, right now, to make the conversation.

 

16" wheels will give much better selection of tires

Hope I don't have to change out the speedo gear.
Already changed it out for the 4-speed manual stick conversion.

Your existing 205/70x15 should have a diameter of about 26.3"

Find a tire for the 16" wheels of the same diameter....or as close as you can get.....while still being appropriate width and load rating for the car. This will mean a lower profile sidewall. I'm sure there's something out there that is close
