Default Top timing chain

Hi guys, I'm wishing that I didn't muck around with upper timing chain tensioner, the car was running fine (series 2 XJ6) Id been hearing a slight rattle upfront at over 2500 rpm and thought id maybe tension up the chain, long story short it now sounds like a can with bolts rattling around in it. everything that I've read makes it sound so easy to just turn the adjuster anti-clockwise and it pulls the slack in the chain out, I've tried moving the tension from the exhaust side to the inlet side and back again, I think I'm missing the principle of how the tensioner works, I have the engine at TDC on number 6 cylinder.
any advice would be very much appreciated.

When you turn that adjuster either way, does the chain tighten.

Its been a looooong time and I forget the rotation, but you can "feel" the chain via the front hole.

The risk that some have it too tight, then a "whirring" noise is evident, so back it off ONE tooth on the adjuster wheel.

The bottom chain can rattle, especially if the engine has been rotated backwards,as the risk of the hydraulic "foot" jamming and popping out of the body is real, then you have serious rattles.
