tranny adjustment

Default tranny adjustment

I recently (3 days ago) bought an 83 xj6 65,000 miles. It has several minor issues which I see being relatively easy fixes. The biggest issue is the transmission. From my research, I'm hoping a front band adjustment will resolve. The transmission will only shift out of 1st when I completely lift off of the accelerator. Shifts 2nd to 3rd fine and back down smoothly, no noises. I believe its a BW66 transmission, buthave notconfirmed that it is. There is no slipping, and the fluid level is right on. Should I just go ahead and try to adjust the front band, or maybe look elsewhere to resolve the problem? I'm only asking because it's 20 degrees outside without an available heated garage to play trial and error. Thanks in advance.

Imanned-up and battled the cold. I did the adjustment of the front band, and I must say, the hardest part was getting the foam and carpeting to lay back in place correctly. It took about 20 minutes, start to finish in 28 degrees and snow. I backed out of the driveway, shifted to D and proceeded forward. About 30 yards down the road, and with no coaxing, a perfect shift to 2nd. Stop sign, right turn. I hit the gas, and it shifted perfectly to 2nd, and a little further down the road to 3rd. I was astonished that such an easy and quick turn of a bolt could be such a drastic improvement. I rode around for about 10 miles of stop and go, grabbed a celebratory 12 pack and headed back home, smiling all the way. Next on the list--- speedometer transducer. I hope it goes as easily as the tranny adjustment. Thanks for the help, Jose.

congrats on the 12-pack, I mean, the transmission adjustment success.The BW66 transmission is easy and reliable. Parts are available for rebuilds. The Speedo Transducer should also be an easy job.

Yeh, after looking around for the bad transducer on the tranny, i realized that it would probably fit into that empty hole towards the rear, and probably plug into that very dirty connector hanging right there. It did, and it did, and I'm in business. Seems the PO took the old one off and didnt bother replacing it. I'm finding alot of things half-assed on this car. They are really simple fixes--looks like someone just was either too lazy or didnt care enough to do the job right, or at all.
