Vehicle/Title history
As I'm just getting to know a little more about these cars, I've found that the older (Series II in this situation) have shorter VIN's, and therefore can be harder to look up vehicle history, etc.
When looking for the vehicle and title history for a particular older Jag, where is the best place/site to gain this type of information? I know the big name is Carfax, but that's only as reliable as the info that they are given...
TIA

I don't think Carfax will accept an old VIN anyways.
You might search for an "XJ6 Registry". If you find one, maybe someone has listed the car.
That's all I can think of at the moment
Others will come along with more ideas

You can get the Jaguar Heritage Certificate... It'll give info on your specific car....

Thanks, David, but this won't be much help to me.
I was more looking to verify mileage, ownership history, etc. From the looks of the website, it only tells you the details of the vehicle as it left the factory...and only if you have supplied them with all the original numbers. As this is a lumped vehicle, I don't have the original engine or gearbox numbers...

These cars were made and used in the paper document era, so would have had a service record book as well as the owner handbook. If these are lost during the period between sale and today, it's not really possible to obtain the information. As for mileage, the speedometer can be removed from the dash in about 30 seconds or less and can then be replaced or tampered with so you can't rely on what is currently showing unless you have the service information. For title in the USA, there may be a register somewhere, but I suspect each state maintains its own. So you investigate the current title, and if that shows a move across from another state, you look at that state's register and so on.
