Here is the actual Epitest unit.

It was apparently used for testing the D-Jetronic system, but may have been developed to test the later L-Jetronic system as well.

Yup, I side with Doug. A tech left it there. Told boss it "disappeared".
Rem9nds me of my former career. A coverage in early home owner policies for personal property, "Mysterious Disappearance"/Almost but not quite a presumption of theft. In actual practice, "I lost it".
Over the years, I've acquired some tech tools that way. One, a hand held device to crank the engine while under the bonnet. If I had any inkling of from whence it came, I would have returned it,
I recall those slide boxed with a magnet for keys. Looked a bit like eary fuse boxes for new fuses
