Just got a 1983 Series 3 Vanden Plus XJ6 with a 4.2 & BW tranny... Wondering what gasoline to use in it for best performance/no knocks, etc?

Thank you all. Getting ready to rebuild this beauty as necessary in the upcoming springtime (if it ever stops snowing here on the east coast/D.C. area)!


My first Jag... been garage-kept for about 10 years or so, so will put in new tanks (if necessary after inspection), new injection/supply hoses and clean/overhaul all injection components; check for tappet hold-downs; lube up liberally b4 my first start-up.

My old Ser III XJ6 ran fine on 87 octane. The only time I ran 89 or 92 octane was in exceptionally hot weather.....when I would get just a trace of pinging when the engine temp increased a bit.

Hi Congratulations on your purchase,

i have always used BP ultimate 98 in my xj since its rebuild many years ago, i have never had any issues with the fuel system.
