Wiper switch stuck "up", wipers not working ('87 SIII XJ6)
Had my windscreen replaced yesterday to clean up and seal rust. Today when I went to turn on my wipers, they did not turn on, and the switch is stuck in one of the two "up" positions (it moves freely between them, but not down). I'm planning to test the fuse any do some wire tracking, but curious if any windscreen or wiper reassembly issues are a likely culprit. Any thoughts?
Thank you!
Thank you!
The only connection between the wiper switch and the wiper blades is electrical so even if the windshield guy messed up the blades it wouldn't effect the switch. Sounds like your wiper switch is the culprit. They can be taken apart and repaired but it's tricky. I had a switch that was supposed to be rebuilt and when I installed it smoke started coming out of the switch. There was a good write-up in Jag Lovers web site a long time ago. Good luck.
That makes sense. It’s odd, the connections into the motor do seem to be getting power, which varies based on switch position, and the motor ground wire also seems good.
That being said, the switch is physically stuck so it probably makes sense to start there and see if a fix there resolves it.
Is there any feedback from the motor to the switch that could “lock” the switch position?

Alright - took apart and rebuilt the wiper switch per the attached directions (thank you to Jose for posting in an earlier thread). Fun little project. I don't know that everything is functioning as it should (it doesn't retract when switched to off, and I'm not sure the delay works), but slow and fast work, and that was the goal for now!
if it is stuck, chances are one of the ball bearings came off its detent. You need to disassemble it following the Newsletter steps, which mean drilling out the rivets. I have rebuilt a number of these and never had one burn as described above.
