XJ12L/700R4 correction for no low gear blues
There is the solution of reworking the stock shifter and console slot to get low gear.
I opted for a B & M Pro Ratchet shifter and a shift light. You get to 5500 quickly and its not a good idea to take your eyes off the road to check the tach. If you leave the 700 R4 in third, its shifts at 5500 without a problem.
Of course, I wanted to shift at 6250, peak power for my combination.
Not willing to leave well enough alone, I installed the Pro Ratchet and Shift light.
This mod it not for the faint of heart. When opening up the console, I glanced in several times, asking myself "do I really need this, want this, it it worth it."
I'll let you know how it goes after the road test.
The graph pattern is the B & M imposed over the stock shifter pattern. I held my breath and bolted it in in the stock location, with new holes. Main issue it the B & M cover is wider, longer, and farther forward that you may like. The shifter lever sits near the same height and center position as stock.

nice mod,i like it!
for my 700R4 i use an early B&M shifter lever, the trans, has a B&M shift kit installed, and shift at 6400 rpm when full throttle!
i also use a light weight small diameter convertor, and flex plate, much quicker throttle response!
21 yrs and holding, yeah a little ahead of the curve!
