I admittedly have a problem with trying to save Series 1 XJ6 as there are so few left due to inherent rust issues etc. I have recently scored a 1972 SWB from Georgia thanks to a Forum member that has matching numbers and seems relatively un-molested. Albeit sun-scorched and floor rusty but not horrible. I also grabbed a 1973 from a salvage yard in southern MA that another member turned me on to for the clean hood last year. I grabbed the hood but have stewed over the condition of the body that has proved better than my other series 1 projects. After getting it home this past weekend and looking at the serial/engine numbers the block number does not match, and I cannot find where the engine numbers come from. The block says 8L 132060-S but the engine bay plaque says 7L63929 L. Odometer says 24K+/- miles. Clearly, unless unusually pampered, the odometer has not turned over? Any help with the 8L serial number or the history of either of these vehicles would be greatly appreciated.
You lucky Americans got those chrome wheels on the Series 1.
I'd kill for a set of those
Peter, I like the silver painted wheels with the larger hubcaps.
But the Americans also got the number plate light plinth above the plate (ugh) and those dreadful rear side indicators.
No, I prefer the UK look Series 1 in all its simplicity.
John, I agree the Series 1 hubcaps are far nicer, but a friend told me the Series 2 wheels are stronger.
Don't know if there's any truth in this.
And as for that later number plate plinth (just plain ugly IMO) I have a spare for you to put on your mantlepiece if you want!
