Default xj6 series III AT shifter weirdness

Hello,
on my xj6 III the AT Shifter won't go to 1st.
The transmission is shifting smooth and working fine when in drive mode.
I Realized anyway that I Cannot move the shifter to position 1.
It just won't go in!
It goes to position 2 but not to 1, and today I needed to be in 1st because I was going downhill on a strong slope street.
Do you think it could be a transmission problem or a shifter problem ?
As in the picture this is the most it can go downshift

Maybe silly, but have you followed the gate pattern on the white line and pushed the lever over to the passenger seat while trying to pull it back into first? Mine definitely will not pull straight back into first.

by the way, I get a real kick out of the multiple selection buttons for cassette tape types--takes me back. I had a manual eject button like yours that could launch a cassette over the shifter--often used by passengers as an editorial statement on my music selection.

wat I did in my cassette is to put one of those butterfly catching nets so it catches the cassettes as they are fired into the rear seat. Works fine.
