I have an early 1987 xj6 auto with transmission issues. Can anyone tell me what makes the transmission shift from 1st to 2nd? Sometimes when cold it won't shift, it winds all way up, then after a while it shifts and from there on out works ok. I also noticed fron 2nd to 3rd, if i let off gas pedal above 2500rpm then it shifts. Is it vacuum or cable shift? I changed fluid and filter 15000 miles ago and has always been ok. Car now has 75000 miles

 

There was someone else with the same issue. I think it was the bands needing tightening . Search the forum, there is some great advice on here somewhere. The gurus will come by soon

 

I hope that is not the fix as i already adjusted both bands (which were way loose) but didn't seem to make a difference in shifting.
