Default xr700 electronic ignition. Use a ballast coil?

1977 xj6 4.2. when using the aftermarket xr700 electronic ignition system:

do you use an external ballast resistor?

do you use a ballast coil?

lots of discussion on resistor, but no clear yes or no answer.

any recommended coil brands/ models?

thanks geneo

"The XR700 requires ballast resistance to limit coil current"

From here....

I only browsed quickly but noticed several specific mentions of Jaguar installations

yes like Doug says , a ballest resistor is requierd for running, do not use a resistor coil, i use a standard Advance auto 12v coil.

altho for starting i added a full voltage relay , when cranking, because of small voltage drop.

mine has been 23yrs and does the job fine!

talking with the old Crane R&D guy, both XR700 and XR3000 are not recommended for V12, only up to V8s, but because of the internal circuits, the XR700 works great.

i tried a XR3000 and it ran terrible, changed back and all is oK .
