1985 xjs 3.6L w/manual trans broken throttle cable
This evening while driving home from a friend's house the gas pedal all of a sudden went to the floor and the engine went down to an idle.
After coasting to the side of the road and opening the bonnet I discovered that the throttle cable had broken somewhere inside the outer sheath nearer the gas pedal than the throttle pedestal.
Fortunately I was able to call my friend and he brought a piece of electrical wire and I was able to rig up a hand actuated throttle out through the edge of the open bonnet and into the interior of the car.
This is a 1985 XJS with the six cylinder 3.6L and the manual transmission. Is the cable on these repairable using pieces of bicycle brake cable or do I have to hunt down what is probably a pretty rare part here in the US for a manual six cylinder XJS?
I am attempting to remove the end of the cable that connects to the gas pedal but so far I am not having any success.
I was able to remove a cotter pin from a pin going through the end of the gas pedal connecting rod but all that did was free up some rod extending up into the firewall. That rod does not seem to want to pull out however. A few hints on how to remove the rest of the broken cable would be most appreciated.
Here is a photo of the end of the gas pedal where I removed the cross pin that connected the gas pedal rod to a vertical rod that I cannot remove.
Here is a photo of the broken cable from under the bonnet where I hooked up a temporary hand throttle to get the car home.
