Could also be a heavy residue of fluid on the slip rings / brushes. Measure the (battery) voltage at the alternator first. If OK take the alternator off and pull the brushes. If contaminated, use acetone on a cloth to clean the surroundings and then the slip rings by turning the pulley by hand. Change around the surface the rings see often. (If you have a compressor cover your face and GENTLY blow the area around the rings reasonably free of fluid first. I use a dust mask and then the automatic welding helmet for such jobs.) Then clean the brushes thoroughly.
