Default 1994 XJS Starting issue

Hi all,

I have a XJS 6 cyl and sometimes, it takes a few tries to get it to start AFTER is has been running for a while. It usually takes no more than 2-3 tries and it runs fine once it gets going. Any ideas???

Tony,

Could you just explain what you mean by a "few tries"? Do you mean it just needs to turn over a few turns before firing, or do you mean that it doesn't start after the engine turns over repeatedly then you turn the ignition off and you try again etc?

Sure, I get in and start it. Go somewhere, to the store, work or church. If I park it and return to it sometime soon, it takes cranking it a few times for it to fire up. The first time it happened I thought "NAUGHTY WORD!", but in the time since have gotten used to it. It always starts and runs fine once it's up and going. I only paid $2,500 for it and have been working through it's issues. Most have been cosmetic.

I cleaned the EGR valve a couple months ago hoping that would fix the issue with starting, but it continues.

Here are a couple of threads that may help:

Also, read the section on "Post-Shutdown Cooling" here:
Cooling System Upgrades

Also try the "key cycling trick": cycle the key through positions 1&2 without cranking, re-pressurizes the fuel lines, car *may* start as usual. But it also indicates where the problem may be. Here's a thread describing it better:

Hope this gives you some ideas!

Try installing the XJ6 CPS (crank Position sensor) bracket upgrade.
It has resolved a lot of my 1994XJS 4.0L engine issues.
The Hot hard to restart Problem disappeared after installing this bracket along
with an idle problem.
The bracket kits are available from the XJENGINEER ( Andy Stodart) site at
Helenstodart@gmail.com
75£ + 4£ shipping from the UK.
Search the forum for "Installed XJ6 CPS modified bracket"
This bracket kit was engineered by one of the Jaguar XJ6 engineers.
No wiring, no major engine work. Just 2 sockets and a screwdriver and about 20 minutes.
It really works wonders for the engine.
