1996 XJS 4.0 2+2 Conv - Need an ECU
I have a 1996 XJS 4.0L 2+2 that needs an ECU. I pulled the ECU and sent it to Module Experts in Jacksonville FL who tested it and said it was not repairable and don't have a replacement for me. I've been looking on eBay and have check with a few sellers that said the units they have won't work. Mine is a LHE1410DF reworked to LHE1410DG by Jaguar. The units that the seller said won't work were a LHE1410AG and a LHE1410AG reworked LHE1410AF. I have now found one on eBay that is a LHE1410DE reworked to LHE1410DH. My question is, Do I need an exact match of the LHE1410DF/LH1410DG for it to work or will a DE/DH unit do the trick?
Bret,
Are you sure it's a DE, rather than an ED?
I'm no expert but I suspect that a number of them are interchangeable. If you look at Jaguar's parts website, there were so many supersessions of numbers that it would seem that perhaps all of the "A" range are interchnageable, and the same for the "E" range?
Perhaps other members who have fitted alternate ECUs may have some views? Or maybe ring one of the UK independent specialists, such as Swallows or David Marks and get their advice?
Cheers
Paul

I believe the "A" range was through 1994. Not sure about the "E" range. I think they went to the "D" range sometime in 1995 or 1996.
My question is will any "D" range ECU work or do I also need matching end letter?

Keep your PROMS if they are good and try another ECM with your PROMS installed.
The PROMS are what chages the part numbers.
I replaced DOZENS 'back-in-the-day' when the recall was in play.
Sometimes I would do 2 a day XJS and X300.
Read and understand the RECALL for info.
I never tried to install the X300 ECM in the XJS so I cannon confirm ECM general compatibility.

Any LHE1410 version of the GEMS 6 ECU from a US car will work in your 96 with the AJ16 independently from the PROMs.
The latest PROM version runs additional test cycles to thoroughly check the functionality of the O2 sensors activating the secondary air injection pump multiple times after starting the engine.
When you replace the ECU you will probably loose the matching values of your TPS stored in the ECU and your idle control may not work.
A TPS reset/calibration (TPS adaption test) may be necessary with the replacement ECU.
The X300 AJ16 ECU will not work in the XJS.

WhiteGC, I've tracked down and purchased a matching number LHE1410DF/DG unit. I heard from another source that if you swap ECU's, you will encounter the immobiliser which is specific to each vehicle and VIN. Have you had issue with that? Can you tell me more about resetting/calibrating the TPS? Is there anything I need to do, or tests to perform before plugging in the replacement ECU, reconnecting the battery, and trying to start it? Thanks,

Resetting the TPS can only be done with a tool loaded with Jag specific software, including but not limited to, PDU, WDS, VCM (not VCM2) & Mongoose. If you don't own a device, you might be lucky and coincidentally have it work, however do not be shocked if your idle is way off. You can find clone devices on eBay that may work, but won't work for very long, so get in, get it done and get out. Don't play around with them.
I had never previously considered the immobilizer. Since others have never complained in the past, I don't think that will be a problem. I think that's been the complaint when trying to swap ECUs between the x300 and XJS cars.

Bret, there is no immobilizer function activated in the LHE1410 ECU, the one is used in an XJS with the AJ16 engine.
A similar GEMS 6 ECU is used in the X300 cars with the same AJ16 engine that have the immobilizer function activated (e.g. LNA1410). That's why those X300 AJ16 ECUs won't work in an XJS.
