1996 xjs fan Mtr. Issue ?
To All,
it’s been two (2) months since since I started up and went for a drive.
I haven’t been able to do a full out blitz on selling the XJS mainly cause I am not sure I want to part with it
…….although I got a request and did send some photos to a member out in california.
Anyway, I decided that I was feeling good enough to take a long overdue ride. RAN AND FELT GREAT AGAIN!!!!
Only issue was the fan speed on the AC was slower on first and second speed….high was fine.
It sounded like the fan motor on the right side was not engaging in first and second speeds …only high.
ANY IDEAS?
Thanks

Here is an explanation from KWE:
"The fan speed is set by the controller automatically and is either a controlled speed according to temperature difference or full speed via a ‘high speed’ relay which overrides the automatic system. On the Mark 2 system the controlled speeds are determined by a series resistor pack controlled by relays. On the Mark 3 system, the fans have electronic speed control by a power transistor and feedback diode assembly mounted on top of the casing. This is notoriously unreliable as the components are not protected against damp and the diode in particular fails. The symptom is usually no fan operation except on high speed, or sometimes it’s high speed all the time. This fault can be repaired by it is time consuming to remove and replace the fan assembly."
So the misbehaving fan assembly has to be removed, and either replaced or the electronics refurbished. One of my fans would run all the time, and I had to pull the fuse. Since I generally only drive with the top down, it hasn't been high on the list to tackle yet.
