Default 350 Chevy engines to replace V12

heh guys

I noticed here in Australia, every man and his dog rips out engines and replaces them with 350 Chevy engines.

I have seen this on a reasonably priced XJS i was looking at.

Sacrilege? Anybody else done the same with one of theirs? Thoughts?

They switch engines and still want V-12 money. Actually 350 weighs almost same as V-12. Most believe reliability is a factor, but V-12 when maintained can outlast a 350.

Sacrilege to some; sensible option to others. The debate has been raging for decades

Cheers

Wink

I'll entertain this time...
I am not an not an advocate for putting 350 Chevy lumps into Jaguars.
My advice:
1. Save your money.
2. If you want a Jaguar buy one with a Jaguar motor.
3. If you want a 350 Chevy buy a Corvette.

My 86 coupe has 350 chevy. My 89 convertible has non running v12. I will probably put carbs and crane ignition on v12 one day.

You have a right to your own opinion but not your own facts.

FACT: Jag v12 and transmission weigh in at 1100 LBS. A chev 350 with 700R4 weighs in at 700lbs You can easily shave off 100LBS with a Alu intake and heads so with the right parts the chevy is almost 1/2 the weight.

What exactly is "V12 money"

FACT: XJS' with proper conversions routinely sell for more than a comparable V12 car. You can check ebay's sold history to verify. Today I observed two similar XJS', both mid 80's models with similar high mileage, the Chevy convert sold for 50$ shy of twice the price of the v12.

FACT: Both engines have been successfully raced, both are cast iron cylinders with aluminium pistons and this would suggest a similar expected life span when properly maintained.....but maintaining a V12 is expensive and difficult when compared to a 350 so often maintenance is differed out of frugality or ignorance. In the real world you can find many Chevy engines still going with well over 100,000 miles, relatively few XJS' make it that far for a variety of reasons. BTW, chevys' dont drop valve seats.

Why not put a diesel lump in it? That way it will still look like an XJS but be really economical.
Or pedals and a chain drive, should tone up the calf muscles nicely.

These debates are ridiculous. Everyone has their opinion and should be respected for it.

I've seen and heard a lot of different debates flare up over auto related topics. Most are extremely trivial. Billet vs. OEM or homemade, "It's not a rat rod-it's a bobber"...what difference does it make?

How many Model A's have Chevy SB, Hemi's, or other transplants; they're still one of the coolest cars on the road, regardless of what powers them.

Purists are die hard brand loyalists, whereas lumpers are die hard auto enthusiasts. Neither one is right, or wrong. They just are. You do what's right for you and your conscience; me, I will follow my heart.
