Default 88 H&E lower fuel pump replacement

I have an 88 Hess & Eisenhardt with a fuel delivery question.

Could someone tell me how to check if the lower fuel pump is working?

The car was running fine. When I went to start it today, it sounds like it is not getting fuel. The fuel pump in the boot is pumping with ignition on.

I am below a 1/2 tank of fuel and am wondering if the bottom pump is not pumping fuel up to the top tank.

Thanks

okay idk anything about the H&E setup and I can't find any good diagrams

Are you sure that is how the system is setup (because I have no idea), I would think the rear of it and lower pump would be setup as usual and the other one would supplement it. If you don't feel like you are getting enough fuel, I would inspect the regulator and maybe change out the filter.

I can see you thinking in it having issues at half a tank though. The lower pump getting pretty noisy and rattly when it starts giving up...hm im going to see if i can find more info on the system to see if i can help out until anyone else gets in here, i just have no knowledge of the H&E setup.

okay okay, so my understanding is the small tank towards the front is lower than the bigger tank in the boot and has a submersible pump that constantly pumps to the main tank, so if there is an issue with this pump or if the car is on a decline, it can't keep up and it may stall at around half a tank.

So it sounds like it is more suspect. As for the lower pump in the back you are asking about, you can feel it running when it is on, hear it prime when the ignition is on, and check for power. You can also grab some cable and jump it from the battery to see if it comes on.

I'm going to get some gas and get above 1/2 tank so I'm sure that there will be gas in the sump. If it runs fine, that will tell me there is no gas being pumped from the lower tank.

If that is the case I was just wondering if anyone has changed the pump in the lower tank, and if so, how it was done.

Thanks

It is submersible, you can dig around and see if there is a service port or if someone here knows of one, but you may have to remove the big tank and then remove the smaller tank to access the pump.

hopefully there is another way of access....

Thanks for your replies to my post. I was hoping that someone had had the same problem at some time and solved the problem.
If not, I will post the solution when I get a resolution to this issue.
I wont have time to work on this until the weekend.
I will let everyone know what happened then.

Thanks for the note. Just a point in case you have not thought of it, if the two tanks are connected by a flexible, check that it has not collapsed inside or become blocked, also check that the systems that must allow air to enter each tank as fuel is taken out is working and not blocked.

Finally got around to checking this problem out.

I went and got 3 gallons of gas and put it in the car.

Turned the ignition on, heard the fuel pump in the boot. Turned the ignition off, then turned it back on, and the car started and idled flawlessly.

I'm convinced now there is a problem with the lower tank fuel pump.

I'll have 4 months to figure it out since the car is now in the garage until spring time.

I may be tempted to take it out on a nice day before then, but I'll just make sure it has over 1/2 tank of gas.

Thanks for all of your assistance.

Peter
