Default '88 V12 fuel gauge only goes to half full

Hi,
just fishing for any practical insight onto what might be the issue. When I fill the tank the fuel gauge only reads half full.

Came across this excellent link:

http://erwinxjs.blogspot.com/2016/09/eureka-fuel-gauge-repair.html?m=1

which indicates likley causes are blown fuse (presumably would not work at all), crack in solder on back of dash display, or faulty sender unit. Hoping the latter as seems easy fix.

Anyone Anything else to kindly add?

Quentin

I suggest you:
  • remove sender and by hand move its arm to the full position and see what the gauge does. If the gauge goes to full, new sender
  • also test the low fuel warning light
  • even with a new sender the gauge may not quite get to the absolute top of the scale. This is caused by microscopic corrosion, invisible to the naked eye, in the electrical path the current takes through the gauge contacts to the gauge electrical mechanism. The Great Palm's book has a section describing this path and on cleaning it. This requires removing the cluster and the gauge from it and very carefully cleaning up tiny screw heads and contacts.
