Default 88 xjs rack and pinon replacement

Ok so i read the book got her up on the lift and just say wow how the heck did they get to the lower steering shaft the book mentions coming in from drivers foot well. Has anyone ever changed one and how hard is it to do.

On LHD models, at least, you can go in from the fenderwell....behind the front tire.....with a long extension and reach the pinch-bolt that secures the lower column to the rack and pinion. It's a little tricky but if you look carefully you can see a straight path!

Note that the bolt must be removed, not merely loosened, to disengage the lower column
