Default '89 XJS proper cleaning technique/materials

My '89 XJS convertible needs a bath! Can anyone offer tips on the right kind (or a good kind) of detergent, cloth, brush(?) to use? Car has original paint and I don't want to risk ruining it. Wheels also need cleaning. I've heard mixed reviews on the use of dish soaps like Dawn. Just want to get it right.

Thanks,

For the top I use 303 Hi-Tech fabric guard & Top Cleaner. Comes in two spray bottles. The cleaner is used to wash the fabric and the Fabric Guard completely waterproofs the top fabric. Water just runs right off. Amazing product. I use liquid wax which isn't supposed to scratch clear coat. Can't say what your paint needs.
