Default 95 won't stop running when key removed.

Sporadically my 95 4.0 will just keep running when I remove the key. It is not dieseling. It started a couple yrs back and only when extremely hot, maybe twice during each summer and when engine was getting warm from stand still traffic.

Figuring it is some contact not closing or opening. Today it happened again and engine temp was normal.

Any ideas on what to look at or for?

That's really interesting. Late 70's MGBs are famous for doing this because a diode would fail, allowing electricity to back feed into the ignition and keep it running after the key is removed. I don't have a diagram handy but I'd look for diodes and relays with diodes and measure if they are still working.

Had a 72 midget! Fun car and was really lucky with zero issues.

yeah I was thinking that sounded about right. Just zero idea where to look.
A couple times I just pulled a battery cable and stopped it. Other day I opened the hood and fanned it 2 times and it turned off. With today being mild and it did it again makes me think the problem is progressing. About 7 times over 3 yrs.

Does it run perfectly normally? Or is there some stumbling?

its possible for a electric fan to back feed the ignition system if the proper diode relay is not used.

Thanks JigJag and Ezrider.

No stumbling, runs fine. Check engine light seems to only come on when I have no choice but to use corn fuel. It has never ran as strong as my other 95.

Ez, The electric fan would screech when starting so unplugged it. Then robbed the one of my other 95. Do you suggest to maybe unplug it and see what happens?

Eagle180,

Do you mean the auxiliary fan starts as soon as you start the car or when the fan eventually cuts in? That fan shouldn't start when the car first starts up. As your problem seems to be when the car is hot, I presume these might be the only times when the auxiliary fan is running. So perhaps the problem does lie there.

Good luck

Paul
