Default 96 4.0 litre XJS - Intermittent Drivability Problem

Hi Folks,

This has happened twice now. I'm driving along in stop and go, and my engine dies. It either won't idle, or it will barely idle but can't accelerate at all or will die upon touching the gas pedal. I can always restart it though, and I found that if I keep the revs up (like in neutral) I can keep it from stalling, so I can drive it two-footed (gas and brake) to keep it moving. This lasts a short amount of time, less than a minute, and then everything reverts to normal. Any ideas? It's a late '96 4.0 liter AJ16.

P.S. No engine codes show up on a scan.

Thank you,

-Mike Beda

Thats a tough one, check your coils first. Thats what always comes to mind with the AJ16

This is not a coil failure mode on a AJ16 engine.

This failure mode in a AJ16 car is typically the TPS. Mine displayed exactly the same symptoms.

They are still available new and are easily installed, but the car must be reset by the Jaguar software after installation. If it was my vehicle, I would take this opportunity to also change the Steeper Motor and to clean the throttle body throughly. What happens is that oil collects in that area and eventually drips down to the TPS. In the future it’s a good idea to clean this area yearly to keep the new TPS from failing.

Another less likely culprit is the ECU is it’s suffering from water ingress, but based on your symptoms it’s unlikely.

Thanks, guys. Spike, the bit about having to get the Jaguar software reprogrammed, is that something only a dealer can do? How did you get yours reprogrammed?

Thanks a bunch. I think I will be getting a new TPS.

One trick is to carefully drill two tiny holes into lowest point of the TPS. This should allow oil to simply drip out, instead of accumulating. Also allows for a good cleaning with MAF cleaner, using the straw provided. I would try this before removing it and having it reset. Like I said, I have AJ6 engines and this was a work around for me on both my cars, not sure if the AJ16 is similar in that aspect

Any dealer that still has the old computers/software can do it. Here in Houston a couple of Jaguar specialists have it.

Brewtech, your TPS is part DBC2626 which is NLA (by the way there is brand new one on eBay for only 150.00 for y’all AJ6’rs !!!)

The AJ16 TPS is part JLM12074 it’s gold plated and it’s available directly from Jaguarclassicparts in the UK for 253.00 dollars, which is over 100 dollars cheaper than what you will get it in the USA.

I am not familiar with the AJ6 engines peripheries as I am with the AJ16, but I would strongly suggest that NO HOLES BE DRILLED on the AJ16 TPS. You will void any warranty you may have on the part, and finding a specialist with the software should not be a problem for most people in the USA

..And remember that one of Jaguar Classic's storage and distribution centres is in the US anyway, so the part is very possibly already be on that side of the pond.
