Actual Fuel Capacity/Tank Size of '95 V12 Convertible
Have read varying specs on fuel capacity/tank size of my '95 6.0L V12 convertible: 14.5, 21 and 24 gallons.
The most gallons I could pump into the tank at its emptiest - the low fuel warning lamp had come on and off again after 210 miles - was 15.92 gallons. Averaged 13.2 mpg between that fill-up and the previous one.
Normally I don't let the tank get that near to empty but couldn't avoid it this time.
Could my fuel gauge and warning lamp be that far off? Worse yet, could I have a partially collapsed tank? Don't smell gas in the trunk/boot or anywhere else for that matter.
In the "Vehicle Care" booklet of the your Owners Pack, it states that the fuel tank capacity of your 6.0 V12 convertible is 82 litres, 21.6 US gallons. It also states "Approximate fuel tank capacity from vehicle run dry to first click on the fuel delivery nozzle gun".
In your "Drivers Handbook" it states that "The low fuel waning light will come on when the fuel has fallen to approximately 11 litres".
In my experience, when the low fuel light first illuminated on my 4 litre convertible, I had more than 11 litres left in the tank.
Today, for the first time in the 18 months I've had this car, I was able to put in more than 16 gallons of gas - 19.04 gallons to be exact. Probably could've put in a little more.
Had just picked up the car from my mechanic, they had done a lot of road testing and the fuel gauge needle was below both the "E" and the red section at the extreme left. The yellow low fuel warning light was on as well.
Did some quick calculations based on the odometer reading at last fill up, and figured I had at least a few gallons left. My fear was that somehow the fuel gauge had broken, as I'd never seen it that low except when the car was off.
Drove home about 20 miles, did one quick errand and then filled the tank. To my great relief, the gauge went right back up to "F".
Up until today, I always filled the car when it got into the red zone. Good to know I have some room if ever needed.
Gratuitous XJS photo. The shop washed the car, but they never quite get the glass clean, and make the tires too shiny...
I have the twin to your car and have the same issue. I recently bought it and I’m still going through the “getting to know you” stage. I’ll PM you to compare VIN numbers, I’m curious about some of the badge locations. It looks like yours also has the “cold weather” package which has the headlamp washers. I’m missing the chrome cover on the passenger side and can’t find a replacement. It seems to me to be a perfect candidate for a 3-D printed replacement, but I haven’t heard of anyone doing that.
Best,
Bruce
I am also missing the passenger side chrome washer cover, have searched pretty extensively for a replacement with no luck. Would gladly purchase a 3D printed one.
