Today I got my car back from the the shop. repairs include radiator rebuild, new electric fan, all new Y pipe hoses, new thermostat assemblies, then for aircon, new receiver drier unit, and he reinstalled the compressor for me that the PO had removed. to top it off, I got a smog check so I could reregister my car. 3k out and wow. she runs like a dream and keeps perfectly cool. no coolant leak anymore and to make things even better, i'll be ready when the sun comes out and I won't be melting in my car . and no blown head gasket after all which makes the car a steal for what I payed! I guess I got lucky because aparrently it could've been upwards ok 7k if it was the head gasket.

How has your XJS been running since the repairs?

I came across this thread when searching about the cost of head gasket repairs. I recently had an XJS inspected that I was considering buying. Based on several issues it had I didn't make an offer. The biggest issue was a leaking head gasket and the mechanic estimated $8K to $10K to fix it. And he is known as a less pricey mechanic versus the ones at the local dealership.

The car has been running excellent! No overheating even as spring starts to appear. I've got an aav valve issue and still the TPS issue to sort I just haven't gotten to it yet. It's been a daily driver for about a month now that the rain is gone (it has one leak that drips right on your knee haha). But like I said before I really dodged a bullet with the head gasket. If you want an xjs (classic advise lol) it's best to make a bigger investment in a car that is in better condition and hopefully well serviced and documented initially then pouring thousands into a car that will require tons of work. You might save thousands. They are super fun cars happy searching!

hey ecbjag without knowing anymore about your problem it sounds like you have the same drainage problem alot of people do.
The vent on the cowl has two pipes that run down from it and drain water that comes in there. They get crap in them and then it ill overflow into the fresh air intake for the vents inside.

here is a link to the thread this came up in, i posted some pics in it. Its a really easy fix that makes such a huge difference lol.

i hope this is all your problem is, good luck!

Hey sidescrollin! The leak in my car is from the top of the weather seal on the windscreen. It drips right onto my leg/knee. I need to replace the glass and rubber because there is a small chip on the pass side. (to add to the list of dozens of things to do!) Thanks for the info though! Nothing like preventative maintenance with these cars!

oh okay, well i guess that kind of sucks you have to replace the windscreen and all. My gasket it real dry but doesnt leak fortunately. When my car used to leak before the fix i showed you i thought it was my windshield gasket or something at the drivers side a-pillar. but one day i saw some of it spill out of the air vent and knew it was this.

It almost always was freezing and woul drop onto my leg and surprise me lol.

hey at least its summer so you don't have to worry about the rain for a while
