Default Bracing under IRS?

This was (poorly) mounted under (or I guess across?h the IRS. I’ll mount it back but my problem- can I drive safely without it installed? in the past the forward mounting threads were destroyed. I could weld weldon nuts in my garage but I have access to a lift 20 minutes away making this job way easier.

That isn't a factory piece, it is something that someone has added. So yes, you can certainly drive your car without it. That's assuming the factory radius arms are present?

When you mention the forward mounting threads are damaged, is it for this piece, or the radius arm cups on the body?

I believe this is in fact a factory part, came on cabrio and convertibles to make up for chopping the roof off.

i assume yours is not a coupe?

Sorry should have specified correct not a coupe- it’s 1987 XJS-C - what I mean mounting wise is there are thread bosses in the chassis. One of them no idea how someone did it but they ripped out the thread. So I’ll need to weld in a weldon nut to fix. Will be relatively simple since it’s just a wallowed out hole. I would much rather weld with it on a lift!

Ah, I missed that this was a cabrio! I've not seen the underside of a cabrio, the factory convertible is different.

I know that the cabriolet's had a brace added from the factory to help stiffen the body but have not seen one personally. I had an '88 Hess and Eisenhardt but it did not have one. Always thought that it would be a good addition to the drop head. You should be able to drive without it to get it to the shop, it won't die. Just be careful of any harsh road surface on the way over.

thom_87XJSC,

You'll be absolutely fine driving it a short distance without the brace.

The late Convertibles have X-braces both front & rear. I've driven my car gently without either fitted when refurbing them and it's absolutely fine.

Good luck

Paul
