Brake conversion
Hi,
I am having trouble with my brake system and was considering moving away from the teves system to the pre abs system
I searched the forum but was not able to find any instructions on how to do this.
Can someone please help me find the thread I need?
Thanks,
Jomo

Hi Jomo
I did a Brake Booster Conversion on my 1990 XJS V12
But then Converted it back to 'Teves' on advice from my MOT Guy, who seemed to feel that in the event of an Accident, because of the Year of my Vehicle it might not meet 'Type Approval' and also in the event of an Accident, if that had been caused by Brakes
The Insurance Company may decide not to pay out my 'Agreed Valuation' if the New Braking System had not been professionally fitted by a 'Jaguar Trained Mechanic'
So with that in mind I decided to take his advice
Though if you decide to go ahead Converting to Brake Booster, it is very easy to do (in the Scheme of all the other things)
Where I found the hardest part, was getting the Brake Booster out of the Scrap Car (which took Two Days!)
Here is a Link to the Thread on how I did it
How I Retro Fitted My 1990 XJS V12 from the Teves ABS to The Brake Booster System
And then Converted it back to the Teves ABS again!
Because of potential problems with Insurance and Type Approval for the Year of Manufacture

It was not clear to me in your pictures if this is possible.
Please let me know.
Thanks for your time!
A very long time ago, I was assisting a mate do this to his 1988 Ragtop.
First and Foremost, he cleared the conversion IN WRITING with:
The Insurance Co.
The State roadworthy authority..
The Accident commission.
He had a 1986 Donor car, as in complete components. The requirements, from the 3 mentioned above, clearly stated that the conversion MUST use ALL components from that Donor car, including hard pipes, brackets and clips, and so on. NO alien items allowed.
A NEW (Reman) master cylinder, and Booster were mandatory, and obvious.
It took us a while, and the end result was what we wanted, as we both had PreABS cars, and this Teves was a problem on the Ragtop, and the Brake Specialists here would NOT touch any component of that system. They explained that they did service that Teves, a long time back, but the failure rate, and ongoing issues were beyond economic for them.
At that time, down here, without that Donor car, the conversion would have been a NO GO. As to the same ask no (2020), no idea rules, and legislation have changed, so probably a big "doubtful".

Hi Jomo
Grant has answered your question much better than I think I ever could
Though just to add that I think its best to stick with whatever Braking System you already have on your Car, as when the Teves is working as it should, it feels a lot more modern and reliable
Where the major problem many people seem to have, is in bleeding every drop of Air out of the Teves System where I would include myself in that, where the only sure fire way seems to be that as described by ptjs (Paul)
Although the biggest problem on our Cars is Access to the Calipers on the Inboard IRS and so I certainly wouldn't blame anyone for having this done by a 'Shop' that has a Car Lift
Bleeding The Brakes on an XJS with a Teves Mk1V ABS
You will find ptjs (Paul's) description of how to do this about 1/3 down the Page of the Link shown above

There's no governmental agency that would ever know or care about a brake conversion or vehicle mods in general.Messing around with emission control equipment is a Federal violation, and can be a problem in some states as well but, other than that, you can typically make whatever changes you want. Nobody looks, nobody cares.
Each state has its own laws. Sometimes laws regarding lighting, license plates, ride height, exhaust noise...things that are readily visible and apparent ....are selectively enforced by local police.
At the Federal level there are probably 10,000 regulations that technically exist. If you're running an import/export/grey-market business, or some such, you'd likely come under scrutiny of the Feds. But there's no enforcement as far down as the average Joe messing around with his own car.
Cheers
