Default CODE READER, Opinion needed

327 v1.4 Auto DIAGNOSTIC Tool SCAN CODE READER USB 1.4 OBD2 ii D9

Saw this code reader on eBay selling for $10.47 with free shipping under the above title. Looks like it will check everything on a Jaguar. Don't know if cable will fit XJS output. Price seems rather low for this device. Would like to have some imput on its worth.

From what I know of OBD-II and what I read on this forum, an OBD-II code reader will only work on (all) cars sold in the US from 1996 on. So if you have a '96 XJS, then yes. It is possible there is a link on earlier cars that could connect and catch a few codes.

Regarding the $10, ELM 327 Code reader, I have one. My experience is that I could not make the software that comes with it work on my laptop. On my tablet, a Windows RT (which only uses Windows approved apps), I downloaded three apps and only one worked. The workable app is called OBDdash.Pro and it seems to work well. Costs all of $2.99. Incidentally, just found it last night, so I can't swear it's the Cat's (Jaguar's) hind quarters, but it produced codes that corresponded to some known faults with my car.

Thanks for your response
I am now considering the ELM327 USB version. The only problem is that I can can't find the 16 pin Data Link Connector (DLC) or the OBD II label. I looked for the DLC under the steering column area and could not locate the connector. The owners Manual for the 1993 XJS gives three or four pages of error codes, but no indication of the DLC.or if the '93 is OBD-II compliant.
Any light thrown on this subject appreciated!

1993? You don't hAve an OBD2 port. I think only the 95-96 model years have them.

They would be under the drivers side dash along the door side. BasicAlly above where the clutch pedal would be if you had a manual.

Thanks Vee
Yes that is where I looked.
Why would Jaguar put codes in the Owners Manual for 1993 and not put a retrieval method until 1995-96?

afterburner1,

A 93 US car uses OBD1, which really means manufacturer-specific protocol and connection. Your data port is in the boot on the right hand side just in front of the rear light unit.

You can't use an ELM327 OBDII reader on your car. You need a Jaguar-specific PDU (hens teeth!) or you can error read codes through the trip computer.

Hope that helps

Paul

As usual, Paul, you are a wealth of information!. Over here in the land of the big PX, PDU means power distribution unit. But I think you are saying that only a Jag dealer has the capability to read the codes through the port in the boot because the reader is scarcer than hens teeth! Please tell me how you read the codes through the dash computer or where I can find that procedure,
