Couple mystery parts, '88 XJS
Behind the grill and in front of the radiator/AC condenser is something labeled Auxiliary Coil. With only two primary wires to it, no high voltage OUT wire. What is this for? Is it now superfluous and can be removed permanently?
Behind that coil, there is a large two pin electrical connector, unplugged, one end goes to a flat metal disk about 3/8" diameter, looks like a sensor of some sort riveted to the flat panel that the coil is mounted to. What is that?
Question on lower grill: I see only two screws holding it, one on each side, is it also attached to the lower center valence exterior panel with rivets?

The secondary coil was for for the ignition. The original-spec primary coil couldn't do the job alone after 3500 rpm or so.
The common thing is to replace the original primary coil with something modern (usually a DAC6093) and abandon the secondary coil.
The sensor thingy is for the heated windshield washers. Below XXX-degrees the heaters are turned on
