Default Diagnostic Tool

Can anyone recommend a good Diagnostic Scanner for my 1995 XJS 2 + 2 6 cylinder. Good middle of the road product.
Thank you,
Art

95 should have OBDII (my 95 does) so any sort of Actron product from AutoZone would suffice. $100 will get you all the buttons you need. But they make even cheaper versions that just give the code (which you’d then have to google because the cheaper ones don’t give the code meaning). The important button is ERASE! -John

This is the one I have. I like that it lets me read live data from the sensors. I don't know if that was supported in 195 but you can email the seller and ask.

Will this one pull abs codes? Many devices advertise that they will, but don’t...at least the Jaguar specific abs codes the xjs like to dole out.

It does for my 1996 XJS, but I doubt it works for the earlier years.

I have a cheap bluetooth plugin reader that works from an app on my phone - it worked well on my 97 Land Cruiser - if your car is OBDII I'd think it could work there too. It could display a wide variety of readings - temps, speeds, volts, fuel mix, etc - can also log stuff to review later, display stored fault numbers and a short description, and clear the stored faults. It was very useful for the Cruiser as it sporadically threw a code due to a ecu software glitch - no actual problem but the cure for the cel was a new ecu, I couldn't justify spending that much to solve it - when the light came on I could just pull the code the next time I stopped, erase if it was the faulty one, the whole process about 1-2 minutes.

I got the reader from Amazon I think? About 10 - 12 US$. No brand name but it uses the ELM127 chip if I remember correctly - there were a lot of different ones available, don't know if they're all good but mine has worked fine. Phone app is "Torque Lite", free and worked great for me. There's a paid version that I guess has more features and no ads but I never saw the need.

Hope this helps, Eric
