EGR solenoid problem on 4.0 engine
I have a 93 XJS with the 4.0. I found out using a vaccum guage that my EGR valve was not working and I replaced that. The problem now is that I am not getting vaccum from my EGR solenoid. I hooked up 12 volts to the solenoid and it functions properly, the problem is when I put the electrical connector back on it and rev the motor up,no vaccum. I checked for battery voltage at the connector and it is 14.2 volts. I cleaned and sprayed all the electrical contacts and still no vaccum getting through the solenoid. The solenoid works but not when it is hooked up, I don't get it. I read there is a EGR tube temp. sensor under the throttle body and I will check that. Should I be looking elsewhere? ECM?
The EGR solenoid will not be active unless the car is in a driving gear. You'll have to have the wheels up, in gear, engine over 1000 RPM and coolant temp above 140 deg. F.
Then you should see some action.
Cheers,

Thanks for the reply XJRGuy, I would never had guessed it had to be in gear to actually work. This is my first Jaguar and I am gradually learning its idiosyncrosies. I had been using a Chiltons XJ6 manual and it mentioned the rpm. and temp check but failed to mention it had to be in a driving gear! Another thing I found out about my car was that the throttle was only opening about 80% of the way and the accelerator cable was in the wrong location in the bracket that holds it. I found out what A or M means (automatic or manual) on the casting and how to check throttle opening also using the A or M stamped on the throttle plate. I wonder how many XJS 6 cyl. engines are not getting full power because these adjustments are off, I know it made a big difference to mine at w.o.t.
