That's a UK thing. Instead of saying the exact year or model year the car has, they say the registration letter on their vehicles number pnate. This is then for someone who knows their years then a determination of at least the registration point... I think the Letters changed every 6 months or so.
So X reg(istration) could be anythibg, especially since the number plates can also be transfered or even given randomly. My XJ-S is an 89 and had a special plate prior my purchase and was then given a generic 'H reg' plate. Though H is well out of the area for it...
