Flush Brake system
Hi,
I check the forum as best as I could but did not find a post on how to change the brake fluid on my car.
Can someone please supply me with the steps?
As always thanks,
Jomo

We need to see if the ABS needs to be actuated to bleed the system. I don't know anything about the ABS on the XJS or the differences in them. In some ABS system, you can bleed as usual, but others you need to control the actuator to allow fluid through.
The basic idea though is to replace the fluid in the reservoir and then bleed all the calipers until you see the new clean fluid come out. ALWAYS keep fluid in the reservoir, sometimes it is easier to have someone watching it and topping it off as you bleed the brakes. It is definitely recommended to get a baster or something to remove as much fluid from the reservoir as possible without running it dry and putting new fluid in. This prevent you from having to flush all that old fluid through the lines and really hurries the process up.
You either need to have a helper to pump the brakes or a vacuum pump/one person bleeder to pull fluid through the calipers.

There is a pretty good description of the procedure here:

This really is a very easy bleed with assistance. Just helped a friend with his. You do not have to start the car. Just get a assitant press the brake pedal as hard as possible, then open the right rear bleed nipple. I like to use a short piece of clear vinyl tubing, so that I can control where the fluid goes. Have your assistant turn the switch to the "on" position, and the pump will do the work. Once it runs clear, (no bubbles), close the bleed nipple, and do the left rear. Once it runs clear, turn the switch off. Move to the right front, and have your assistant now treat it as you would any other car. Pump the brake system up, then open the bleed nipple, and have your assitant tell you when the brake pedal gets to the floor. While pedal is to the floor, shut the bleed nipple. Repeat if needed, check your fluid. Move to the left front. Repeat until clear. Once done, turn the switch on, and allow the pump to represurize the system. Job done. Drive hard!! And often!!
Also, idk what jaguar recommends, but there is nothing wrong with running DOT4 in a DOT3 rated system. Dot 4 just has a higher boiling point. Fluids that read DOT3/DOT4 are usually the lesser, leave them alone.
