Default Front Fog Lights

I installed a set of factory front fog lights on my 95 XJS. The lights plugged into the wiring harness, relay was already there. Replaced the panel switches with the correct switches. Lights did not come on, the rear lights work as they should. I have power to the fog light relay, jumped the relay, front fog lights came on and the instrument indicator light was lit. So all is well with the power side and the light grounds. Fog light switch does not light up like the rear fog light switch does. I did swap out the relay with a known working relay... no change. The fog light switch is not picking power to operate the fog light relay. I have tried the switch with the headlights on / off / and high beam, no fog lights yet. The fog light switch assembly is new and I have two of them tried both with the same results. What do I look at next?

Thanks, I do have all 5 of these green bound manuals. They are very helpful, that is what got me as far as I am now. I ran out of time yesterday and had to put it away. I Was hoping someone had corrected this same problem on their XJS.

Hello,

When I installed the factory fog lights on my 95, I kept on blowing the fuse, (lights would not come on) because the h2 bulbs in the lamps where touching the chrome housing and causing a short

Not the case on this one, I removed the relay and put a jumper between the line side to the load side in the relay socket. Both lights came on and the front fog warning light came on as well. So I know that everything on the that side of the system is working. There is no power to the fog light switch as indicated by the "no light" in the switch when pushed on. The rear fog light system works as it should, but it picks up control circuit power from a different source than the fronts do. I need to trace down the front source.

Have you tried bypassing the switch to see if they work? Remove the switch and short the wires together; if the lights come on then the switch is faulty.

I will try that, but I have two new in the box fog light gang switches and have tried them both with the same result.

Hi RonaldP,

Did you fix this issue?
I have the same issue and am trying to find out what setting fixes it.

I have pdf copies of the electrical guide but pretty hard to read.
I do see that in some cases there is a separate front/rear switch and in others just one.
Also that there is some shorting jumper for US/ROW that also changes behavior.
I have not been able to conclusively identify the jumper.

Neither side of the relay coil seems to go to any hard voltage, neither are ground and neither are +12V, just seem floating.

I am expecting the fog to go on with lights in low beam.

Trying to work out if I can do this off the one rear fog switch or if I have to wire in another switch get the second switch but then where does the heated rear window switch go?

Front Fog Lights-fog-light-kit-94-96.jpgThere is a kit diagram that shows the two gang switches that replace the rear fog/ rear window heater switch with the double fog light switch. The warning flasher with the blank switch gets replaced with a new switch for warning flasher/rear window heater. The two new switches plug into the same harness plug the old switches are removed from, internal wiring is already there.

Thanks a lot for coming back :-) after I pulled the switch I could see that the required pin was not connecting to any switch terminal. Lacking the purpose switch, I jumped pins 5 and 7 and got it to work so now both front and rear come on together. I do not know the logic as to why the need to be independently controlled. Will look out on eBay for the right switch but the right lights are hellishly expensive. My new hella's fit well and are OEM in at least name but not $500:-) thanks again to confirm.

The rear fog lights are terribly bright. Have you seen them? That's why they need to have separate controls. It's the same way on my 04 X type and I think on the XFR I test drove as well. The rear fogs and front fogs are not necessarily used together

Rear fogs are 21W, same as brake lights.

The tail/brake light is a twin filament bulb rated 5W/21W. With tail lights on the rear fogs should be much brighter. If you hit the brakes the light intensity will be about the same as the fogs.

This is with tail lights and fogs on.

Daniel Stern told me to go to a Honda dealer parts department and get thier brake light bulbs 6w/27w , they are nickel plated not brass. The rear fog is brighter than that, but I can't remember which bulb it is. I will look at them later and see what I put in there.

Hi RonalP
Have you solved the problem with your fog light switch finally? I've got the same one with my '95 4.0. Any suggests would be appreciate.
Thanks

No, I have not worked on my XJS for about 7+ months now. The wiring diagram indicates there is a jumper installed in the harness just before the fog light switch when the front fogs are factory installed. That jumper provides power to the switch. That is why my switch light does not turn on when I push it in. The fog lights worked when I jumped out the relay, so the main power circuit to the lights is correct and the relays are good. I have no power through the switch to the relay holding coil. I just need to research where in the car the jumper plug is located. I think it is just behind the panel where the switches are. It should be an easy fix if I ever get back to work on my car. I put the car up when I heard left front suspension noises. I am looking at installing all new front bushings, shocks, and rebuild the brakes.

Good luck with yours.

Yes I did and it works property since. To find a plug (or jumper) follow the wiring under panel from switch.
