Default Front Wheel Bearing Seal 1990 w/ABS

I have been through older posts and also double checking parts on a few websites. Before buying anything I was hoping someone could help out. It seems that the bearings/races are the same for all years after 79 to about 92, but around 1990 the seal changed. NAPA denotes no change in the seal both Timken 473454 and Beck/Arnley 052-3413 bring to the same NAPA part# : 473454 .... Rockauto says Beck/Arnley 052-3413 starts in 1993, but an older post a guy had to order Beck/Arnley for his 1990 ABS. Does anyone have some insight on this?

Thanks,

I can tell you my 90, which still has functioning ABS, had two different hubs up front and they used two different seals.
If you can, pull one (or both) of yours off and look. I don't think I ever did figure out what seal was used when for sure,
even on cars with matching parts.

Looking at my notes I replaced my odd hub with ones that takes that funky looking Beck/Arnley 052-3413 seal so they both match now, I think I thought
at the time it was the later/better version. I also think I remember the Beck/Arnley not fitting very well but it's been awhile.
Use good grease and adjust them to spec.

The seal changed at the introduction of the abs rotor ring, defined as being at VIN 147268. As always, just look at the Jaguar Parts website to see the change and the parts diagram and part numbers and prices.

Cheers

Hi Paul,
Out of interest, is the data on the VIN number change for various changes publically available anywhere?

I read that too, but I have an ABS hub off my car that took the other style seal. It's still upstairs in a box. Must have been some changeover lag, or someone made this one out of a non-ABS unit at some point.
I replaced it with the usual ABS/seal style for simplicity but it'd been on there at least 15 years.

wolf_walker,

I don't enough about them to know if the old seal actually fits properly on the abs hub. However, as you can see from the parts website, the setup is quite different, with the pre-abs hub having a water shield and also a hub water shield before the hub oil seal. The abs hub appears to have neither of those shields fitted.

Asdrewq,

The Jaguar parts website details all the VIN point changes when a part is changed. It's always the place you should go to first to verify parts numbers. Don't rely on any external supplier or website to get the right part number.

Cheers

Paul

The seals are not interchangeable between the two hubs. The multi part water shield stuff you're seeing is old school factory(kind of like the ball joints used to be a multi-part affair, the service replacement for that style is a pretty normal looking seal.
The later one is just the big fat weird one. Neither seem to keep water out overly well that I've seen. Both style hubs/seals fit the spindles fine.

I believe the odd side had a grease fitting on the hub too. Been awhile.
