Default Getting seat belts to un-retract?

'85 Coupe

I unbolted my seat belts and they retracted all the way onto the spool. I've tried sticking a screwdriver down in the tang to try and hold it down but it just pulls tighter. How the hell do I get these seat belts to un-retract?

Thanks,
Darel

Please excuse if this does not help, as often US spec seatbelts are different from UK on these cars. But, if the reel is off the car, the belt will only pull out if the reel is in the same orientation as it is when bolted in the car.

Any other position, the locking mechanism will prevent it being pulled out.

Crap...you're right. There goes my plans of using the front belts from my parts car as rear shoulder belts. I'd have to lay the mechanism flat in order to make it work, which I obviously now cannot do.
