Hi Treborefir

Just another long shot but if you cleaned out the Vee any small splash of Water can have your Car sounding like mine when I started her up

Here are 3 Videos

One when I accidentally got a water splash from somewhere, which made a sort of ticking noise on Start up

The Second One was sometime later after She had dried in the Hot Sunshine for a day when the noise went away

The Third One was put on by somebody else to demonstrate the sound of a dropped Valve (so I hope its not that with your Car)

These are on Page: 54 of my 'Cherry Blossom' restoration thread and here is a link to that page: Video of various engine noises (don't have nightmares!)

There is also another Video of me Balancing a 2p Coin on edge on the Inlet Manifold of 'Cherry Blossom's' V12 Engine
Which is on Page: 40 of my 'Cherry Blossom' restoration thread and here is a link to that page: Balancing a 2p Coin on edge on the Inlet Manifold of my V12 Engine

SOLVED?! After much frustration I took everything apart again and replaced the distributor cap with the original and VOILA! the noise got softer and softer and then went away??? I revved the motor and the noise came back louder! and then slowly went away and now is completely gone???!!! It hasn't come back yet so WTH?

This is one of the more strange things I've encountered playing with cars...Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks again for all your previous suggestions and thoughts.

P.S. Before swapping the caps I mic'd all the components and they are exactly as original. The only difference I noticed was the old cap is much more beefy than the new one.

To me, the noise sounds like a hydraulic lifter not pumping up but, of course, that’s not the case here.

Any ideas?

The sound changed at the end of the video? went from a tappet type knock to a lighter tap?

Maybe check the dizzy cap has been screwed on straight and not sitting up on a lump or anything?

Hi Craig,

The noise is gone but I don' t really know why. I reinstalled the old cap and the noise was there but eventually went away. This is very strange but I don't believe i'll reinstall the new cap to check. I'm just glad it's gone away.
