Door Grief - A conundrum
Hello All,
I'm sure some people will laugh at this.......I have a major problem and don't know where to start:
I have the child locks activated on my rear doors of my 2002 x-type 3.0 SE, but one of the external door handles has 'given up' When I try and open the door from the outside, the handle doesn't engage with anything on the internal mechanism, as if a gear is not engaged. The handle also doesn't return properly (to go flush against the door).
So, I can't open the door from the inside or outside and because I can't open the door, I can't take the panel off to see what's causing the problem! I may as well weld the door shut and get in the car ala Dukes of Hazard.
Any ideas?
Rob.

Hey Rob and welcome,
hmmmm, that's a good one....The auto lock/unlock on the FOB doesn't work either? If the door handle on the outside doesn't go flush with the door itself, that's where i would start looking...It's very very rare that both out/in side handles don't work.
Try and push the handle in to get it flush with the door...don't worry about breaking anything becasue guess what...it's already broke...
Once you get the handle flush, try the inside handle to open the door.....
let us know..

I haven't had it sorted as yet, but the problem only seems to be intermittent.
When trying to open the door from the outside, sometimes there's just nothing, and a closed door looking back at you. We have found that, when trying to open the door from the outside, do as follows.
Insert fingers into recess and place thumb in the middle top of the handle, press hard at that point as you lever the handle outwards with your fingers.
It may work and it may not.......obviously if it does, like me, its only a temporary solution.

RE: Door Grief - A conundrum
Thanks for the advise, but no joy.
The problem is that the inside handle isn't broken, the child lock is on, so simply doesn't let me out. The fact that the outside handle is broken and won't let me in puts me in a crappy situation because I can't open the door to get to the mechanism to have a go at fixing it (short of taking a cutting torch to the door!).

My drivers door has the same problem as yours Jimmy bob. Its only intermittent as it only happens once in say 2 weeks. Actually two days ago it wouldn't open at all unless i opened it from inside first. I'm pretty sure its from some idiot not allowing the doors to unlock before yanking on the inside door handle, just my theory though. I think its crazy though that the door can decide when its broke~!
