Default Harmonic Balancer V12

The alternator drive pulley on the crankshaft is spinning on the harmonic balancer hub on my 92 XJS V12. Tough change? Will I have to pull the radiator? Pretty basic, ie. bolt in crankshaft and gear pullers for removeal. Any surprises like reverse threads in crank? Balancer availability, NAPA or the like or will this be a harder to find part? Alot of questions and as always in advanceany help from you gentlemen is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Hack.

I did it on my 94 not too long ago. Not a bad job. There is a pulley in front of the balancer. Remove it, or you won't be able to get the balancer out from the engine bay. There are four bolts, just remove them all. Use a long ratchet, but it on the big bolt, and use the engine to break it free. Then you can gently pry the balancer free.

Reassembly is a bit tougher. The balancer will not go on far enough for the stock bolt. I went to a hardware store and bought a longer bolt with the same threads. I was able to use it to press the balancer in place. Just make sure you torque the bolt enough. SOme people use a transmission lock on the flywheel, I used a strap wrench with a long enough handle that I was able rest against something and was able to torque it down that way.

If you have any doubts about it's integrity, this is the time to replace the front seal.

You do not have to remove the radiator or drain any fluids.

You can try the normal sources (Motorcars, Coventry West, etc), but you may find a problem gettng one. The other option is to send yours in for rebuilding, but your car will be down a couple of weeks.

Greetings Hack,

The radiator and fans are not in your way, once the belts are off it's all accessable from underneath. I can't help with a crank pulley for late XJS, sorry. No funky threads to worry about on anything.

Late to the thread, however, I ordered a reman Harmonic Balancer from:

www.damperdoctor.com

Least expensive price anywhere I have seen.

Some how this old thread is the first Google result for how to pull a Jaguar V12 Damper but it doesn’t tell you how.

Here is how: put the crank bolt back in partially. Put the engine turning plate back on. Tighten the bolts…. POP! Comes right off.

I rebuilt mine using bonded polyurethane around 7 years ago, hasn't missed beat. The balancer changed for the 6 Litre when the damper cone was deleted but they are interchangable provided both are XJS marelli.
