I've never liked Pirelli's, I've had too many with belt separation issues. P4000's were particularly poor grip in wet or snow conditions. Never had any issues with Michelin's, I suppose you get what you pay for.

Maybe its me but I love Pirelli P600, they Stick like $%#$ to a blanket and give incredible road holding, in my own experience anyway.

Not a Cheap Tyre Price wise either.

But being open minded, I'd like to know what others think of Pirelli P600 vs Michelins.

I'm with you on the P4000's though, got them on my Celebration Convertible, though not for much longer I hope, as likewise not impressed with the Road Holding.

Do you have Michelin Pilots? and any idea on price?

OB,

You might want to go and check the manufacture date on the P4000s on your Celebration. I suspect they really need changing.....

Hi Paul

That's a good idea but I very seldom use that Car, I really only bought it as a 'Banker' as it will be flavour of the Month, if or when prices go up.

At which point I am going to splash out on some New Wheels, so it would really be best to wait so I can get some New Tyres to go on them.

Which will look a whole lot better, than using the old rims.

In the USA I haven't seen retreads/recaps for passenger cars since the 1970s. I dunno if they were outlawed or simply fell out of favor. My Dad would buy them from time to time for the family second or third car which never saw anything but putt-putting around town. I don't recall any problems ....under those circumstances, at least.

Every XJS I've ever seen out the road is being driven like is was made out of crystal and the owner had a bowl of goldfish on the front seat. From a safety aspect any old tire would probably be OK

All that being said, and despite my opinion that most people buy way more tire than they need (or even appreciate), I'd draw the line a recaps, personally.

Cheers

Hi Doug

What do you mean 'buy way more tire than they need' ?

Do you mean less expensive Tires, or ones of a lesser width ie 225 instead of 235.

I thought £150 UK for a P600 wasn't too bad, unless you could maybe recommend something better and maybe less expensive.

As I have got another XJS to Re-Shoe later on, so that kind of info, could come in very handy.

Bearing in mind that I don't want to change from using 15 inch Wheels.

Buying a high performance tire when they drive like a little old lady on her way to church.

Or buying a tire with a 50k mile treadlife warranty when they drive 2000 miles/year.

That sort of thing

I think they are MXV Plus. I usually read the reviews on Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels and decide from there. I have always found the survey results do follow my experience with a tire.

I usually get tire there or Costco, depending on what Costco has and what they cost. The last tires I bought for my X Type were $126 on the Tire Rack and $298 at Costco. Even with paying for cross border shipping it was cheaper from Tire Rack.
