car has 98k on it, and I was driving and went to downshift the trans to 3rd gear, and heard a slight thunk. immediately the trans fail light came on and the car was stuck in 3rd gear. as it's a 93 it doesn't even have OBD 1, let alone OBD2, so I can't pull any codes apparently. debating on converting the car to a chevy 350/700r combo as the conversion, which i'd do myself, will cost as much as my jag shop selling me a used transmission (which I have no idea as to the condition, supposedly it's in good condition with low miles) and paying the installation fee to do so. truly, if given the choice, i'd rather have my transmission gone through so I know the condition or another used one gone through, but I can't help but wonder if it's just some sort of electronic glitch as opposed to a mechanical failure, but if so, how to tell with out pulling a code. next step, i'm told is to pull the pan, look for metal fragments, but who knows if there'll be any. if it's some sort of locked up clutch they may not see anything in the pan. and help or advise would be appreciated.
